The Sport of Pocket Bike Racing

In: Recreation

Pocket bike racing, which is also known in some places as Minimoto or Mini GP racing, is a type of auto racing that is done with the use of smaller versions of full size racing motorbikes, also known as pocket bikes. Pocket bikes are raced around go kart tracks. It’s extremely popular in Europe and Japan, and is increasing in popularity in many other countries, especially in North America.

Typically a pocket bike is around a quarter the size of a full sized motorbike, and has an engine of about 45cc producing somewhere between 3 and 15 horsepower, which varies with the actual model. The machines have no suspension, relying instead on any bumps being absorbed by the tires. Most weigh roughly 35 pounds. Models for newcomers will usually output in the region of three to four horsepower, while the more expensive racing models run with much more power. The ideal racing pocket bikes are designed with an excellent weight to power ratio. Modifications are often used to enhance acceleration and speed. Despite their miniature size, both children and adults race pocket bikes at speeds of up to sixty m.p.h in organized racing leagues.

Because they are small pocket bikes are easy to transport, and they do not cost a lot which adds to their attractiveness for both adults and children. The least expensive pocket bikes imported from China start at around $250 for a basic model, while prices can be as high as $6000 for the best Italian manufactured pocket bike. Children from around six or seven can learn the motorcycle racing while adults are able to experience the adrenaline rush of motorbike racing but not the risks involved in full-sized motorcycle racing.
