All About Beautiful Hawaii Islands

In: Travel

The 50th state in the United States is made up of a chain of islands collectively known as Hawaii, but it often causes some confusion because the largest of the islands in the string is also known as Hawaii. For a better differentiation, many simply call Hawaii island the big island. The islands of Hawaii are actually the result of underground lava formation beginning in the base of the ocean and building upwards until the magma extended above the depths of the Pacific Ocean.

There are eight inhabited islands in the chain of the Hawaii islands with some others tipping their faces out of the water, but they are not settled. Nihau, the north west-most island of the chain is the smallest of the settled island and the big island is situated to the further southeast link in the chain of the islands of Hawaii. Oahu is home to the state capital Honolulu as well as you’ll find there a lot of things to do in Hawaii for vacationers, selected by former ruler King Kamehamea due to the proximity of the natural harbor, now well-known as Honolulu Harbor.

Other lands in the Hawaii islands include Kauai, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoulawe and Maui. Between these islands transportation is possible by air or boat with the larger islands having airports taking large commercial aircraft and others smaller, commuter aircraft.

With the islands of Hawaii beginnings followed back to barren lava growth, it is theorized that plants and animals were brought to the islands by wind streams, in the water and by flying birds. When the first human came for Polynesia in about 500 A.D., animals and plants had already taken possession of the island and recent conservation methods have ensured the gone on growth and stable habitat for the native species.

The islands of Hawaii became an important strategy for the U.S. Navy and Air Force, still before Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. It’s still home to U.S. military bases, that provide a large population with civilian job opportunities, it also features the memorials for the soldiers who died in the attack.

The population of the islands of Hawaii has grown tremendously, particularly since getting a state in 1959, as the nose count in 1910 registered a human population of about 154,000. Habitants have raised to over 1.2 million in 2000. The islands of Hawaii are the only U.S. state entirely surrounded by water and is situated around 1,500 miles away from mainland at the Pacific coast of California.
